How's? and Why's?
This section offers advice on the selection and application of industrial x ray inspection systems. We explain the differences in technology employed and uncover some of the myths concerning industrial uses of x ray inspection machines.

To enable buyers of x ray inspection machines to have an informed choice concerning all aspects of product inspection systems.

Operation of industrial x ray inspection

Specified and used correctly a good x ray product inspection system can typically reduce customer complaints by up to 70%, an inferior system programmed incorrectly can result in headaches and trauma for all concerned. When evaluating x ray inspection suitability you must be aware of the limitations of the system and your products, if you set too fine a sensitivity the false reject rate (FRR) can render the system totally unsuitable. When you evaluate the suitability it is important that you make the supplier give you guaranteed results, if a full product evaluation is not carried out then you should tread carefully.

The question you should ask yourselves is "do you want just any industrial x ray inspection system or a genuine improvement in quality and subsequent reduction in customer complaints?" if you want the former then the choice of supplier is simple, if you are serious about quality then so should your supplier be

How do industrial x rays work

INDUSTRIAL X RAY INSPECTION

High voltage applied to the x ray tube this sets the penetrating power.

The tube current sets the flux, number of photons.

The tube is turned on and off like a light bulb, there is no radioactive material ever present.

The x rays are arranged into a fan shape which passes through the product, losing energy as it does so and reaches an x ray sensitive diode array.

A "3D" image of the product is built up, the "third dimension" being x ray absorbtion, or how much of the x ray energy is absorbed by the product..

The processor maps this image in greyscale, from white which is 0 to black at over 65,000. Some commercial systems use less than 1000 layers of greyscale which reduces definition.  Using software image processing the image is analysed a good/bad decision is made. The x ray systems we supply uses up to 10 "operators" to find contaminants and identify features such as weight, shape, size, thickness etc.
